The Barbara

Barbara is known for her optimistic and outgoing personality. She was a fixture at her NORC’s programs and classes in Co-op City. When her husband passed, she was grateful to be surrounded by people and activities and relished the opportunity to go on trips with new friends.

When the pandemic hit, Barbara's favorite classes were moved to an online platform. Though she had a cell phone, she found it difficult to navigate through Zoom. Barbara then turned to the JASAChat program and was matched with Howie, a musician who has always found a connection with older adults. From the beginning, Barbara and Howie hit it off and they make a point to call each other on a weekly basis and during holidays. Having no family members in the area, Barbara has expressed how much comfort she finds in having a close friend like Howie nearby. They often chat about their shared interests in food, travel, and music.

“I look forward to ‘Mondays with Howie.’ He’s such a gentleman! I feel so at ease talking to him. He takes the time to call. Especially when you live alone, that's music to my ears."
