The Sofiya

 Sofiya was born in Kiev, Ukraine, and moved to New York City in the 1980s with her husband and two sons. Once in the United States, she worked for an insurance company as a database administrator. However, when the company downsized and outsourced its information technology department, Sofiya found herself in early retirement.

"To be honest, when I first transitioned into retirement, I was not very happy about it. I was so used to working all the time and having a place to go every day. I began to feel that I was sinking into depression. However, once I found out about the art classes at Senior Alliance, my energy was renewed. I found a new passion and purpose in art."

She says that the JASA art studio is a great place to learn about different painting styles, and great artists, and to discuss works of art with other members.

"I really appreciate that JASA gives us these opportunities."
